Bloober Team, riding high on the positive reception of their Silent Hill 2 remake, is eager to prove their recent success wasn't a fluke. Their next project aims to solidify their position in the horror genre and showcase their growth as a developer.
Bloober Team's Path to Redemption
Building on Success
The overwhelmingly positive critical and fan response to the Silent Hill 2 remake has been a significant boost for Bloober Team. Despite the considerable changes made from the original, the remake was well-received, dispelling much of the initial skepticism surrounding the project. However, the team acknowledges the past doubts and is determined to prove their capabilities extend beyond a single successful title.
At the Xbox Partner Preview on October 16th, Bloober Team unveiled their next horror title, Cronos: The New Dawn. Conscious of avoiding being defined solely by their Silent Hill work, Game Designer Wojciech Piejko emphasized their desire for a distinct project, stating to Gamespot, "We don't want to make a similar game [to Silent Hill 2]." Development on Cronos began in 2021, shortly after The Medium was released.
Director Jacek Zieba described Cronos: The New Dawn as their "second punch" in a two-hit combo, with the Silent Hill 2 remake being the "first." He highlighted the initial underdog status of Bloober Team, acknowledging the widespread doubt they faced when initially announced as the developers. Zieba expressed the honor of working on Silent Hill, a series beloved by horror fans. The studio's public plea for patience during development underscores the pressure they faced.
Ultimately, Bloober Team delivered, achieving an 86 Metacritic score. Piejko commented on the immense pressure and the "impossible" task they accomplished, overcoming significant online negativity.
Bloober Team 3.0: A New Era
Piejko positions Cronos: The New Dawn as a testament to their ability to create a compelling original IP. The game features a time-traveling protagonist, "The Traveler," navigating the past and future to save individuals and alter a dystopian future ravaged by pandemic and mutants.
Leveraging the experience gained from the Silent Hill 2 remake, Bloober Team aims to evolve beyond their earlier titles like Layers of Fear and Observer, which featured less robust gameplay. Zieba credits the Silent Hill team's work as the foundation for Cronos.
The Silent Hill 2 remake marks a turning point, representing "Bloober Team 3.0." The positive response to the Cronos reveal trailer further bolsters their optimism. Zieba's vision is for Bloober Team to be recognized as a leading horror developer, having found their niche and aiming for continued organic evolution. Piejko reinforces their commitment to the horror genre, stating their team's passion for it makes a genre shift unlikely.
